Bir Zamanlar Subatan
1912’de Van’daki Subatan köyünde gerçekleşen katliamın sonucu olarak kayıtlara geçen çocuk cesetlerinin fotoğrafları, hem ulusalcı kanat hem de Ermeni lobisi tarafından manüpülatif bir imaj olarak servis edilmekte. Türkiye’nin yakın tarihiyle yüzleşme sürecinde katledilenin ve katledenin hangi taraf olduğuna dair yazılı ve sözlü tarihe dair veriler, ‘suçlu’nun kim olduğuna ilişkin iddiaların temelini oluştururken, durumun siyasi bir söyleme dönüştürülme çabası tek gerçeğin ölü bedenler olduğunu gölgeliyor.
Bir Zamanlar Subatan isimli video, yukarıda bahsedilen fotoğraf karesinin loop halinde tekrar ettiği; bir tv yayınındaki aksaklığı çağrıştıran bir görselden ibarettir.
*Aynı isimli bir diğer iş ise; serigrafi tekniğiyle üretilmiş aynı isimli videonun karelerinden oluşan ve sağ alt köşede kırmızı Avrupa Birliği yıldızlarının bir mühür şeklinde basıldığı bir baskı olarak yeniden üretilmiştir.
Once Upon a Time in Subatan
Photographs of corpses of children, recorded as the result of the massacre at Subatan village of Van in 1912, are being served by both the nationalist wing and the Armenian lobby as a manipulative idea. While in the process of Turkey confronting its recent history, the data on the written and oral history with respect to who slaughtered and who isslaughtered underlies the claims about who the ‘guilty’ one is, the effort to transform the situation into a politic discourse overshadows the fact that the only reality is the dead bodies.
The video called Once Upon a Time in Subatan is merely an image which consists of the repeating loop of the photograph mentioned above, bringing a breakdown of a TV broadcast to mind.
* Another work of the same title is reproduced as a silkscreen print which consists of the frames of the same titled video, with red European Union stars stamped as a seal at the lower right-hand corner.
